A production of the musical, Ragtime, was the first show that he ever saw.

Just after graduating from Columbia University, Brandon Victor Dixon landed the role of Simba in the national touring company of The Lion King.

His first breakthrough leading role in a Broadway came in the production of the jukebox musical, Motown: The Musical, in 2013. Brandon was also nominated for a Drama League Award in the “Distinguished Performance” category for his excellent performance.

When Republican Vice President-elect Mike Pence attended a show of Hamilton in November 2016, Brandon thanked him and then addressed him saying, “We, sir—we—are the diverse America who are alarmed and anxious that your new administration will not protect us, our planet, our children, our parents, or defend us and uphold our inalienable rights. We truly hope that this show has inspired you to uphold our American values and to work on behalf of all of us.” Later, President Donald Trump demanded an apology for the “harassment” of Pence although Pence had stated that he was not offended by the statement.

Brandon Victor Dixon co-founded WalkRunFly Productions with Motown the Musical choreographer Warren Adams in 2013 to support the younger talent in the field of production. The production company also worked on Trial of the Century, a musical based on the famous Lindbergh baby kidnapping that took place in March 1932.
