Leroy Sane suffers thigh injury ahead of Germany World Cup campaign

Germany defeated Costa Rica in the final match of Group E play, but were eliminated from the World Cup.

The German national team have been left sweating over the fitness of Bayern Munich forward Leroy Sane, who suffered a hamstring injury playing in the Bundesliga this weekend.

Sane, 26, suffered the injury during Bayern’s 5-0 victory over Freiburg on Sunday evening. He was replaced after 76 minutes.

A club statement read: “Bayern will have to do without Leroy Sane for the time being.

“The 26-year-old suffered a torn muscle fibre in his left rear thigh during the 5-0 home win against Freiburg on Sunday evening.

“This was the result of examinations by the medical department of the German record champion.”

The injury leaves Sane in something of a race against time to regain match fitness ahead of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, which starts on November 20. Germany’s first match in the World Cup is three days later, against Japan.

The Germany international has been in fine form for Bayern this season, scoring 10 goals and assisting six times during 16 matches in all competitions.
