A major outback highway has been closed after a man was killed in a horrifying two-car collision in the NSW mid-west region.
Emergency services were called to the Castlereagh Hwy at Caerleon shortly after 3am on Monday after reports of a crash.
Police believe a Ford utility had been travelling east when it collided with a Ford hatchback which was travelling west.
Officers and a passing motorist attended to the driver of the ute – a man believed to be in his 80s – before paramedics arrived.
Tragically, the driver died at the scene.
He is yet to be formally identified.
The driver of the hatchback – a 22-year-old woman – was treated for suspected back injuries before being taken to Dubbo Hospital for treatment.
The Castlereagh Hwy was closed on Monday morning in both directions with traffic diversions in place, as specialist police were brought in to examine the crash.
Police expect the arterial route to remain closed for a number of hours.
Anyone with information about the incident is urged to contact Crime Stoppers.
