Piper Laurie is DEAD to me!

Her performance in Carrie as the crazy bitch mother was a highlight of my formative filmgoing.

I thought she was the actress Victoria Vetri…she looked like her

DL needs to leave some dirty pillows on her grave as a memorial

Has Betty Buckey commented yet?

And still Eva Marie Saint walks among us.

I can let you have several cases -- cheap.

Damn - I really liked her!! Her autobiography was really enjoyable. She was one of those women who “stayed current.” Damn …. Have we talked to Leslie Caron lately?

by Anonymousreply 7October 14, 2023 9:55 PM

Aww! I'm so bummed she passed.

I just recently watched her on an episode of "Cold Case" (a really good, underrated show) called "Best Friends." Piper played an elderly woman (and a great-grandmother) who, as a teenager during the Great Depression, had a forbidden, secret lesbian relationship with Billie, a black, butch teenager that went missing in 1932. We find out later on in the episode what happened to Billie. The ending of the episode is very "Thelma & Louise" (minus the fact that one of them survives).

RIP Piper!

by Anonymousreply 8October 14, 2023 9:58 PM

I liked that episode too. I consider “Best Friends” one of the best episodes they ever made. The episode is so cinematic, it could have almost been a feature film. It reminded me of “Carol” (2015) at times.

Piper has that great, heart-wrenching scene towards the end when she finally reveals to Lily and Scotty that she actually had feelings for Billie long ago as a Depression-era teenager - feelings that she hid for the remainder of her life. It’s so sad.

by Anonymousreply 10October 14, 2023 10:15 PM

Rosetta Jacobs was her real name - how on Earth did she come up with Piper Laurie?

by Anonymousreply 11October 14, 2023 10:17 PM

I'm crying into my dirty pillows as I type.

She seemed to be well liked by costars and fans alike.

This could be its own thread (maybe it already was) - agree wholeheartedly.

And I loathe procedurals with the heat of a thousand suns. But something about this one focused on the people's lives, not just their deaths, and I really liked it.

by Anonymousreply 16October 14, 2023 10:33 PM

One of the best to ever do it. Rest well,Ms Laurie 😔😭😞

by Anonymousreply 17October 14, 2023 10:33 PM

TRIVIA: the nightgown she’s wearing in r13 was a variation of a blouse she wore to a [italic]Carrie[/italic] costume fitting. The costume designer liked it and just whipped up a longer version, using the blouse as a pattern.

Has Sissy Spacek made a statment yet?

by Anonymousreply 19October 14, 2023 10:37 PM

Predictions for the next two celebrity death- Rhea Perlman and Ryan O'Neal.

by Anonymousreply 20October 14, 2023 10:39 PM

Yeah, there has been a thread or two on “Cold Case” here on Datalounge. I discovered the series on Max just a few month ago. I’m still on the third season (as of the writing of this reply though).

I’m the same way. I’m not the biggest fan of procedurals either, but I like how “Cold Case” tackled a lot of difficult, tough issues (abortion, child endangerment, discrimination, homophobia, sexism, Vietnam, etc) without getting too judgmental or preachy at the same time. The show was ahead of its time. Plus, the ending of each episode had a bit of surrealism, which was so unusual for a CBS series.

by Anonymousreply 21October 14, 2023 10:44 PM

She’s such an interesting actress, with a beautiful speaking voice.

It’s remarkable that she’d basically left acting when CARRIE came along, and was living in upstate New York as housewife. She never expected that whole second half of her career.

My lesbian friend has a thing for a film called "Snapshots". I've avoided watching it, but I queued it up for tonight.

She was one of a kind, that's for sure. I loved her in " Children of a Lesser God".

Rest peacefully sweet lady.

by Anonymousreply 24October 14, 2023 11:36 PM

Got to meet her three times, once when she was on Broadway and the rest at CHILLER. She was great on stage too. I have "Carrie" and "The Hustler" DVDs signed. She was lovely.

When "Twin Peaks" was re-booted and not yet aired, I asked if she was coming back and she said "no". Instantly thinking she didn't want to revisit the character, I asked "why not?". Shockingly she said they didn't ask her. WTF, she was nominated for an Emmy and won the Golden Globe for it. Alas, I skipped it.

RIP Miss Piper.

by Anonymousreply 26October 14, 2023 11:56 PM

R26, I wonder if the Twin Peaks people were afraid she would out-class everyone else?

by Anonymousreply 27October 15, 2023 12:44 AM

I loved her in The Hustler (1961) with Paul Newman.

[quote]Has Sissy Spacek made a statement yet?

They're all going to laugh at her if she doesn't!

by Anonymousreply 29October 15, 2023 9:35 AM

I just watched her in a 1983 episode of St. Elsewhere. She played the long suffering wife to Alan Arkin’s hot-tempered husband. Her character had a stroke and she was very convincing.

RIP.

She was terrifying in Carrie. Great actor

RIP sweet lady

by Anonymousreply 31October 15, 2023 5:58 PM

I really liked her as Doug's mom on ER. Very light role, but she was great in it.

by Anonymousreply 32October 15, 2023 6:10 PM

Wonderful interview at r 22. Thank you for posting.

I did sort of get the impression though that Piper, smart and lovely though she was, never really got the gumption to properly speak up for herself and her career constantly suffered for it. It seems like with every hit she'd have, it would be followed by fallow years.

by Anonymousreply 33October 15, 2023 10:15 PM

Bye-bye! We've already moved on to Suzanne Somers.

by Anonymousreply 34October 15, 2023 10:15 PM

She was a fun, mature actress like Martha Scott or Beatrice Arthur IMO. I may be misremembering, but didn't she basically talk trash about both Carrie and Twin Peaks? I could swear I saw an interview where she delicately states how shocked she was at the popularity and success of Carrie and that she wasn't very impressed by the script (but gave it her all anyway); and of Twin Peaks she essentially felt that it didn't make a lick of sense she played all her scenes as if they were detached from anything else her character had said or done.

Lovely actress, but she might have been a pill speaking her mind to creative types in charge.

by Anonymousreply 35October 15, 2023 10:41 PM

Betsy Palmer had a similar attitude to Piper Lauire's attitude regarding being in a horror movie. Palmer didn't like the Friday the 13th script and thought it was garbage. She did the movie for money. But, Palmer cashed in on the popularity years later by going to horror movie conventions for signings.

Maybe I will, maybe I won't.

Her Margaret White is leagues above Julianne Moore’s turn, which was horrible.

Hmm must mean someone hugely famous is about to die. Usually when two well known B list stars, particularly women, dies an icon completes the 3rd.

RIP. I’m sure Michelle Williams is grieving the death of her grandmother.

Remember reading that Piper thought Carrie was a comedy. She played her role with that in mind and was surprised by the tone of the final product. Doesn't seem possible: even in my retelling here, I'm thinking she couldn't have been serious? But I believe she was.

by Anonymousreply 42October 16, 2023 2:47 PM

R42 - She was being cheeky.
